An Introduction
The Range Rover Register was formed in late 1984 by a group of
Land Rover Club members at a meeting of the
Association of Rover Clubs,
Bill
King who is now the club's President, was given the task of
collecting the subscriptions and setting the wheels in motion for
the formation of the club. The original aim of the club was to trace
and register the pre-production Range Rovers (known as
VELAR's) and the vehicles
involved in the press launch in June 1970.
Since 1985 the club has evolved to encompass all aspects of this
magnificent vehicle. We remain the only British club catering solely
for the Range Rover owner and enthusiast, and welcome owners of
early models through
'Classics' to current
models.
30 years or 30 days, we are the club for you!
A Club for all the family
The Range Rover Register is committed to family involvement in
club activities. A family member is issued with a membership card at
no additional cost. This entitles the family member over the age of
17½ to the rights and privileges of membership, except receiving
their own copy of the magazine. Many family members have serves on
the committee and are encouraged to take an active part in the club.
History of the marque
One of the main aims of the club is to secure materials relating
to the history of Range Rover. Our
History
Officer holds an archive or rare materiel produced for the
vehicle, from both Land Rover
and private sources.
Where possible these items are displayed at
events and made available
to members for reference. As the vehicle continues to be developed,
the Range Rover Register is committed to maintaining it's archive of
information.
Club Shop
The Club Shop
provides a stock of Range Rover related items and a comprehensive
range of club clothing, fleeces, caps sweatshirts, tee shirts and
badges, as well as models, books and stickers.
The Club Shop forms part of the Club's display stand at events.
In addition to attending the major 4x4 shows, the club also attends
classic car shows and country shows throughout the UK.
Discounts
The Register has arranged a number of discounts with various
suppliers. In particular discounts off insurance premiums to bona
fide club members. Many parts suppliers will also offer a discount
to our members, and it is often possible to save far more that the
annual membership fee in the value of discount obtained.
Events
The Register organises many
events for members each
year. One such event is the Birthday Rally which is held during a
weekend close to the launch date of June 17th. In addition we attend
the major 4x4 shows in the UK, giving an opportunity to members with
interesting vehicles to display them on the club stand. The club
stand is also a place to meet with other members and officers of the
club. In June 2000, for the 30th Anniversary of the Range Rover and
15th Birthday of the club, we organised a celebration event at the
Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon
at which over 600 Range Rover drivers and families attended.
The grass roots activities of the club are organised by local Area
Representatives. The reps will organise regular local social
meetings and arrange days out off-roading or scenic driving. The
Area Reps are also members of the committee and often hold other
office within the club.
Off-Road Driving
The club has many members who enjoy the off-road capability of
the Range Rover. Whether your interest is in driving on private
sites to hone your off-road skills, or driving the many unsurfaced
roads of the British Isles, you will find like minded people to
enjoy this pastime with. The club's
Rights of Way Officer is able to give advice on the aspects of
driving the 'green lanes' of Britain, with particular regard to the
various regulations governing this activity. Advice is also made
available in locating suitable routes to drive.
Charity
The committee of the Range Rover Register select a
charity to support.
On of the main fund raising activities is to organised courtesy
rides on an off-road course for members of the public to be driven
around the course by our members, demonstrating the off-road ability
of the Range Rover. Members, who receive no remuneration for their
contribution, have raised thousands of pounds for the
British Heart Foundation,
FSIDS,
Hearing Dogs for Deaf
People and more recently for the
UK
Air Ambulance Services.
Classic and
Concourse
The club has many members who are active in the world of classic
cars. They work hard to maintain their vehicles in pristine
condition and show them in club and national contests. These members
are a great source of information for those interested in restoring
vehicles and stiff competition for those wishing to show their own
vehicles.
Camping and Caravanning
The Register tries to include, where possible, camping facilities
at most of the events we organise. This may be one of our national
events which may attract up to seventy caravans and tents, down to a
local weekend camp for just a few. Either way the caravanning
permits are arranged by our Camping
Officer in accordance with current regulations.
Rally Marshalling
A number of members take an active part in rally marshalling.
Some have qualified as recovery units, others operate radio cars and
many assist on special stages. The off-road abilities of the Range
Rover often means that our vehicles are used to move personnel and
equipment to the more difficult to reach sections of a stage.
